The 1994 film “Dumb and Dumber,” staring Jeff Daniels and Jim Carey, had a following of those attracted to scenes of snot and diarrhea. Daniels has a new roll on HBO’s “Newsroom” that attracts another type of ignorants.
In a typical scene his rants, as newsman Will MacAvoy, refer to the Tea Party as the “American Taliban”… and identify Conservatives as those that “love America but hate Americans!” Mr. Daniels admitted in a recent CBS interview that this roll reflects his personal views.
“Just a TV show”…that’s what my Dad used to remind me as a child alarmed by scenes on “Lost in Space.” Newsroom is a fictional TV production. Many people believe what they see, even if it is not factual. Some become “low information voters”…or “wrong information voters.” Ronald Reagan identified these as “those who know so much that isn’t so.”
This growing confusion over truth is understandable, as “News” productions worldwide deliver much of the same fictional message found in Newsroom.
Four years ago I returned from a teaching trip to Bolivia with a dozen absentee ballots entrusted to me by evangelical missionaries. At that time these good people received their news from CNN almost exclusively. I didn’t know for sure which candidates these voters supported, but many overheard narratives belonged to CNN.
Today’s popular messengers, Hollywood and many news producers, promote a false worldview. If you believe everything you hear…you may be deceived!
“So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days.” Ephesians 5:15-16 (NLT)
