Demanding Dependence

By: Susan Bea Good

2011 was a “first” for me and my husband…the first time in thirty six years we had to write a check to the Federal Government on April 15.  We now have just one dependent child in our home. The grown kids return for visits…but those multiple deductions may be gone for good!

The IRS defines a dependent as a Qualifying Child with:

Relationship– the taxpayer’s child or stepchild (whether by blood or adoption), foster child, sibling or step-sibling, or a descendant of one of these.

Residence– has the same principal residence as the taxpayer for more than half the tax year. Exceptions apply, in certain cases, for children of divorced or separated parents, kidnapped children, temporary absences, and for children who were born or died during the year.

Age– must be under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year, or under the age of 24 if a full-time student for at least five months of the year, or be permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year.

Support– did not provide more than one-half of his/her own support for the year.

Clearly understood…children are dependents. Not so clear, is why millions of adults are treated as such…by our government!

Our three oldest children were once dependent upon us for care. From birth to age 18…they knew that Dad and Mom would provide. Their independence grew over those years…becoming more self-reliant, and finally competent, they now support their own needs. Good parents try to prepare their offspring to be capable of caring for themselves, and maybe a family of their own someday.

How did so many Americans lose their independence? What happened to self-reliance? Why are millions today satisfied with life…provided for? Of course there are multiple reasons why people accept so much assistance…the morality of each may be debated. But the underlying principle of freedom through self-governance is lost when people become dependent on others to give them what they did not earn for themselves!

When the IRS returned funds, we understood why. We had overpaid throughout the year and irregardless of needqualifications, or any other special designations…that money belonged to us, because we had earned it!

“Daddy Government” is being financially crushed today, under the heavy load of dependent men and women…and may soon be unable to care for all of his demanding “children.”

“In the fear of the Lord one has strong confidence, and His children will have a refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26/ESV)

The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and be a part of it!
