Levite Loyalty

By: Susan Bea Good

The Lord informed Moses of the people’s idolatrous activity below. Moses had been receiving “rules for engagement” when he and the Lord were interrupted by cries of “We worship you, yahweh…our lord…who has saved us from Egyptian bondage”

Moses moved quickly to descend Mt. Sinai and see for himself what these rebels had done in his absence. “OMG”…the “not in vain” version, may have been appropriate that day, when he came down from the clouds and saw the people of God worshiping a gold-covered statue of a calf!

When Aaron was questioned about the situation, he stated that the golden-donations were just thrown into the fire, and the calf came out miraculously…claiming “God did it!”

God was going to do something which would not result in bovine sculpture. He demanded a loyalty-call! Any who would commit to stand with the Lord were asked to step forward. All the Levites responded, declaring their faithfulness to God. They would be rewarded later with irrevocable privileges in the future Tabernacle/Temple.

Next, God ordered the immediate deaths of 3000 of the idol worshippers, to be killed by Levite swords. Finally, God sent a plague on those who had disregarded His command to have no other god before Him.

God wants our loyalty…He wants a people who trust Him, and live in a habit of obedience to His commands. We should expect that He is the same today as He was in Moses’ day. Our response to Him can be as the Levites, who said, “We will stand with the Lord!”

“Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:3-4/ESV)

The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and be a part of it!
