America was once said to be the land of the free, home of the brave…the land of opportunity…and it still is! Tragically many who have been taught to dismiss these claims now find themselves and their children living in a land of inequality, injustice, and impossible odds against success.
Amante is a young African-American teen living in an inner city area of Grand Rapids with his uneducated, welfare recipient mother. These factors, and the lack of a dad in the picture, place him in the category of “at risk”…the new “underprivileged.”
Did you take in all the factors that Amante has against him? Birthed outside of marraige, he lacks the example of parents involved in self-supporting work, he’s surrounded by the perception of injustice towards his race, and has accepted a mindset of “poverty” because of location and labels.
One of the most important factors in Amante’s life is overlooked…he is an American!
Even in troubled times this nation still offers a level of freedom and opportunity that is found nowhere else. Amante can succeed!
I met Amante at the after school ministry program he attends four days a week, where he receives a meal, emotional encouragement, and spiritual guidance. I was there because this hopeless young man verbally assaulted someone close to me. After speaking with the teen about the road he’s on, he showed a small amount of remorse, indicated by the possible presence of a tear…not sure about that though.
So, Amante, you are an American. Your education is provided free of charge. You are surrounded by opportunity…take a better look around. People are traveling all over your city working for a better life. It takes self-control, and hard work, but you can succeed in supporting yourself, and providing for an intact family in the future.
My message to all of the Amantes in this country is, go to school, do your homework, stay off drugs, do not steal, do not engage in physical relationships which produce babies, and thank God that He allowed you to be born here in America!
