The Declaration of Independence was developed by men we call our Founding Fathers. Artfully written by Thomas Jefferson and adopted by the Continental Congress in July of 1776, its contributors intended to inform the population, of the then thirteen colonies, of their role in the declared freedom from British tyranny.
In recent years this knowledge of freedom, its intentions and practical implications, has almost disappeared from our conversations and classrooms. General public education rarely covers anything more than names and dates. If detail is included it is often erroneous, or focused on aspects used to misrepresent our national history.
Slavery, for instance, has been unanimously taught to be a White European offense against the Black African. That practice is used even today to question the validity of the July fourth freedom-Declaration, because it didn’t immediately apply to all races. Though slavery had been a common practice in cultures throughout history, it is still today implied to be an uniquely American offense. In fact, American Blacks held slaves as often or more than Whites…and Whites were enslaved as often as Blacks. The American Civil War ended the practice, and uniquely endorses the work of the Founding Fathers in their Declaration.
That Independence Declaration was a wake-up call to all Americans…to be free! There was a high price paid for it in the 1700’s, an even higher price in the 1800’s. It’s been over one hundred years since this nation fought hard to be free. Perhaps the time has come for another round of cost, to maintain freedom in America.
We Americans have a say in the level of tyranny we will tolerate. We are still able to vote out those who attempt to alter our Declaration-rights. Though we may not have this ability much longer, as there is a limit to the level of ignorance, apathy, and selfishness a free nation can withstand before it falls into the hands of the awaiting oppressors and experiences another type of slavery to tyrannical governors again.
“…Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. Return, every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds.” (Jeremiah 18:11/ESV)
