A Cowardly Death

Brittany Maynard kept her promise. Though she was a day late, and almost backed out, she took the prescription that stopped her heart on Sunday. This morning, her friends in the “Death with Dignity” movement are praising her “brave” decision.

Late last week, Brittany, informing the media that, dying now “doesn’t seem like the right time”…postponed her scheduled suicide on November 1. Reactions seen in public comments were harsh and informative. Many accused her of grandstanding for money and attention, daring her to “get it over with already!”

Brittany’s terminal diagnosis was not unique. Most people die slowly from end-of-life illnesses. Many are aware of their prognoses, and even while anticipating pain at the end…most of these don’t kill themselves to shorten the dying process!

This suffering woman received terrible advice. Her family (mother and husband) publicly supported her plan to skip out of this life before it was her time. This morning the assisted suicide crowd is praising Brittany as their newest hero. I’m sure that they love the publicity of a young woman dying by their methods. I disagree with their assessment. From my view,  Brittany Maynard died as a coward!

Death is not our “choice!” God gives life, and only He should take it. Though, He does permit the foolishness just witnessed in the Maynard case, it is not His best for us. Either in living or dying, we make choices everyday that may remove us from His best. The ultimate “worst” occurs when a human chooses to end their own life!

Brittany knows the truth now. She faced her Creator before any of us even heard of her passing. She may not have acknowledged Him in this life, but she is forced now to do so.

“…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phillippians 2:10-11/ESV)

The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and be a part of it.
