What Do Brittany Maynard and Bruce Jenner Have in Common?

Peer Pressure

By: Susan Bea Good

Peer pressure is a powerful force. It takes great strength of will to resist the momentum of those who push an agenda. The ignorant and immature are especially likely to succumb to the will of bullies. But all of us are challenged to resist social pressure to conform in our words, actions, and even our thoughts.

Last fall Brittany Maynard was pressured into killing herself, not because she didn’t want to live, but because the ghoulish supporters of assisted suicide wanted her to be their spokesperson, postmortem. When she lived beyond the date of her planned “exit” she was ridiculed and harassed by the Death with Dignity crowd. Even Brittany’s mother and husband cooperated with this deadly conformity. Mark Home from Politicaloutcast.com said, “The whole point of the ‘death with dignity’ slogan is to get other members of society to support and help a person in his or her chosen path to self-destruction. It isn’t just a private feeling, but a form of public cooperation. The person announces the plan and everyone supports the plan.”

Last month Bruce Jenner gave into pressure to publicly conform to his life-long desire to change genders. An impossible task, but don’t waste your time sharing that fact with the media, transexual bullies, or family members who surround and support “Caitlyn” today. “She” is now their most celebrated person, scheduled to receive the ESPN Courage Award in July.

Bruce and Brittany have one thing in common. Both of their lives were destroyed by conformity to peer pressure. The results? Brittany left too soon, and Bruce will never be permitted to return.

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and He himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:12-15/ESV)
