Following A Real Friend

Claudia Moore, Christian and Honey-Boy

By: Susan Bea Good

Claudia was a missionary to Bolivia, who kept her strong Texas accent even after living thirty years in the Andes Mountains. This single woman turned down many proposals of marriage, including one from a surgeon in the US. Her work with Bolivians became her life. When she was asked to save the life of a baby boy, born from drug addicted parents, she fought her own Mission to amend the prohibition of singles adopting on the field.

Claudia developed Melanoma in her forties. Her diagnosis came late, the disease having already metastacized into her kidneys, lungs, and brain. She fought hard, but left after just a few years.

Only now, ten years later, am I realizing what a good friend I had in Claudia. She allowed me to learn from her, without taking over. When I became competent she stepped aside, and then backed me up for years without demanding credit. She passed on to me her wisdom of how to mesh two cultures (American and Bolivian). Her assistance in understanding our mutual Andean friends was priceless. I feel her influence to this day, as I continue to plan work in the South American country that we both grew to love.

As a friend, and sister in Christ, Claudia is my role model. Today I am usually the older and wiser woman in a group. And I am always cognizant of “what Claudia would do”…not an unbiblical model, as Paul told younger disciples to follow him, as he followed Christ.

I don’t know if I will ever again have such a friend as Claudia Moore, but my intent is to be such a friend to others.

(The Apostle Paul) “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (I Corinthians 11:1/NIV)

The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and be a part of it. Adonai Eloheinu!
