Religious Liberty Under Attack

“Keep your religion in the church building!” This sentiment is exposed in recent court rulings. From the Supreme Court to District Courts, religious liberty is being trampled in America.

A June Christianity Today article bemoaned the direction of our nation after the Scotus’ ruling that month on Gay marriage, but still maintained, “We still live in a society that protects free speech and free assembly, that supports religious freedom, that permits all its citizens to participate in governing at all levels.”

And then there’s Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s assurances to religious Americans after the SCOTUS ruling: “Finally, it must be emphasized that religions, and those who adhere to religious doctrines, may continue to advocate with utmost, sincere conviction that, by divine precepts, same-sex marriage should not be condoned. The First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths, and to their own deep aspirations to continue the family structure they have long revered.”

Just two months after the SCOTUS ruling things are becoming clear. Public reaction to news articles about Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who refuses to issue same-sex marriage licenses, reveals the confusion, and ignorance of many Americans when it comes to the issue of religious freedom:

“you must leave your religious beliefs in church (or wherever you worship)”

“…elected officials must understand the separation of church and state. It’s NOT an attack on her religious freedom.”

“I admire this lady’s defiance, and standing on her belief. But the Bible says one must also ‘obey the laws of the land’..to ‘Render unto Ceaser the things that are Ceaser’s’ and Render unto God the things that are God’s.”

“This situation is EXACTLY why the Founding Fathers chose to specify a separation between Church an State.”

“As a follower of Jesus Christ, I am sick and tired of all these ‘Christians’ who act stupid and bring shame upon our faith.”

We Christ-followers had better get this one right. This nation was founded on biblical principals. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and speech. If Christians are prohibited from holding government jobs, refused protections under the Constitution, fined, and even jailed for refusing to violate their beliefs, we are in BIG trouble!

(Jesus) “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10/ESV)

The purpose of this blog is to encourage Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and be a part of it. Adonai Eloheinu!

  1. So sad to read people undermine the constitution of the USA and its democracy.
