“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” (Romans 15:13/ESV)
Tuesday, May 3rd is the filing deadline to register as a candidate for Republican Precinct Delegate. I served in that role during the 2012 election cycle and, though Mitt Romney was not my first choice for presidential candidate, I worked tirelessly for him here in West Michigan. I made 2000 calls by phone and in person, often going door to door in heavily Democrat neighborhoods asking for support for the candidate on the ticket who I believed was best for America. I can’t do that this time around.
If Ted Cruz is not the Republican nominee I will not support their candidate. As I’ve said many times, I cannot vote for Donald Trump. I won’t make phone calls asking my neighbors to vote for a con-man. I will not risk my neck knocking on doors in rural neighborhoods, or walking the sidewalks in the city to support a Trump-ticket.
Last month I completed the required paperwork to run for Precinct Delegate. For weeks I procrastinated the County Clerk filing, finally sliding the application into the side pocket of my car door. Today I took it to the trash, ironically the same day as the Indiana primary vote, where my hopes may be raised a bit with a Cruz win or dashed completely with a Trump win.
Of course I long for our nation to be blessed by a truly conservative, God fearing, Constitutionalist candidate for President. I’ve followed Senator Cruz for years and had little hope that he would get this far, due to the widespread hatred of his commitment to righteousness in morality (he’s mocked for his stands against abortion and gay marriage) and his faithfulness to the US constitution (to which the majority in Congress are ignorant or antagonistic).
Perhaps tonight I will be rejoicing that Senator Cruz still has a chance to stop the Trump wagon from flattening what remains of our national respect. But it will be too late to file that August ballot application. However, if God blesses this nation with a Cruz nomination nothing will stop me from supporting him for President.
This blogger’s hope is to be an encouragement to Christ-followers to see God’s Big Picture and to willingly participate in it. Adonai Eloheinu!
