“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.” (Romans 16:17/ESV)
On Monday a fuel tanker truck exploded on an Ohio freeway. The flames spread across the overpass creating a deadly trap for any unwise drivers who might continue under the bridge. On scene off-duty police officer Matthew Bowman can be heard on video warning motorists, “Get Back!”
I find it interesting that anyone needed to be warned not to drive directly under a massive burning bridge. Apparently some do not have the innate or acquired instincts that would protect them from the affects of such a scene.
I find a correlation between those who would drive under a burning overpass and those in America today who throw themselves, heart and soul, into every flaming heresy that comes along from the false gospel crowd.
An example of false gospel is found in the soon to be released movie The Shack, based on a novel by William P. Young. The content of the book and the film is based on unorthodox alternative teachings about God and His involvement with mankind. And yet the heresies in this material appeal to many who desire a god who is custom-fashioned to match their own specific felt needs. Never mind that a created deity is powerless and the result of following one is only to distract the spirits of those who made it.
The list of modern fiery obstacles to avoid is long. If you have been a follower of Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, or Beth Moore (to name just three) I would advise you to Get Back! Regardless of the pleasure their words bring to your spirit. You are either unaware or underestimating the danger of the spiritual flames of false teaching.
God reveals through Scripture that only His truth will set you free. Though this truth is hard to hear, if you accept its message the result will be true freedom. If you resist biblical truth and insist on following a false gospel you will live this life as a slave to sin and possibly die in your sins as an unrepentant false Christian. Jesus warned that many will say to Him in the Day of Judgment, (my paraphrase) “Lord, did we not belong to You?” and Jesus will say, “Get back!”
